(Close): Japanese shares rose on Wednesday after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised its outlook for global growth.
The IMF said it expects the global economy to grow by 3.5% in 2012, up from its earlier projection of 3.3%.
Investor sentiment was also boosted after the Bank of Japan's deputy governor said the central bank may take additional measures to boost growth.
The Nikkei 225 index rose 2.1% to close at 9,667.26 points.
The broader Topix index also gained 2% to 819.27 points.
